Maternity photography is not just about displaying the baby bump, but capturing the emotional experience of becoming parents. It’s about documenting the feelings, bond, excitement, and affection that come with expecting the birth of a child. But as with most people having their photo taken, couples are not sure how to pose during a maternity photoshoot and do not want to see their photos appear unnatural.
As an experienced maternity photographer, my job is to make couples feel at ease having their photo taken. During our sessions, I guide my clients through natural movements, meaningful interactions, and genuine expressions as they interact with each other. My process ensures their maternity portraits capture the true relationship between the two of them and document the excitement they have during this time.
Here are a few of my natural posing techniques that can help to make each image feel intimate and effortless, whether the session is held outside, at home, or in a professional studio.
Focus on Connection Instead of Perfect Poses

Maternity photos are usually best captured when the couple has forgotten that they are to look perfect and concentrates on one another. The natural interaction brings out the real emotions that are not possible with rigid or over-planned poses.
Rather than just standing and smiling at the camera, try:
- Holding hands and discussing how they are excited about the baby.
- Have a moment of silence as you look at one another (this always produces genuine smiles and a few laughs)
- Laugh together or remember a special pregnancy milestone
- Gently hold hands on the baby bump.
Choose Comfortable Poses That Highlight the Baby Bump
One of the most crucial aspects of a maternity photoshoot is comfort. Pregnant people undergo physical changes, and therefore poses should always be natural and supportive.
For flattering maternity photos, try:
- Leaning back slightly to emphasize the baby bump.
- Placing a hand above and/or below the belly.
- Trying different angles of the body
- Sitting in a comfortable position as the partner supports.
- Walking together for candid-style photographs.
- Avoid forcing complicated positions and instead focus on poses that allow couples to interact naturally as themselves.
Simple movements that capture candid moments are the most memorable maternity photos, so always keep the posing simple and true to the individual.
Use Gentle Movement to Create Natural Expressions
Static poses can make photos feel unnatural, especially for couples who aren’t used to being photographed. Incorporating small movements will help you create relaxed, genuine maternity portraits
Incorporate movement by:
- Walking together while holding hands; moving towards and then away from each other
- Whisper something meaningful to one another
- Adjust your partner’s clothes or touch the baby bump
- Slow dance or sway together, foreheads touching
- Whisper an inside joke or tickle each other lightly (make your partner laugh!)
- Lean in for a kiss on the forehead, cheek, or belly
- Wrap arms around from behind and rest a chin on the shoulder
The best maternity photographs are not about the pose. They are a reflection of the relationship of the couple. By incorporating small movements through interaction, your maternity photos will create genuine visual stories.
Create a Comfortable Environment During the Session

Natural maternity photos are created in a comfortable environment, so take the time to plan out how to make the experience relaxed, stress-free and fun!
Always plan for the session. Meet with your couple and discuss:
- The type of photography that the couple likes
- Locations where they feel comfortable
- What to wear and outfit coordination
- Any fears of posing or appearance.
When couples are free to be themselves in a relaxed environment, they’ll feel confident and relaxed, helping their photos feel more natural, emotional and timeless.
Incorporate Personal Details and Meaningful Moments
No two pregnancies are alike, and maternity photography should show that. Images will be more authentic and meaningful by adding personal elements.
Things like:
- Taking pictures of the couple in the nursery of their baby.
- Adding ultrasound pictures or personalized baby objects.
- Capturing a favourite outdoor setting or activity.
- Demonstrating special pregnancy items that show the couple’s personalities.
Select Outfits That Enhance Natural Poses
Dressing can determine the level of comfort and confidence of the couple during their maternity photoshoot. The most suitable outfits enable movement, and they enhance the overall personal style of the session.
Flowing dresses, soft fabrics and comfortable designs are some of the best looks for expecting parents, as they create natural movement and emphasize the pregnancy shape.
Couples should select outfits that do not appear to be too matched and feel true to them. There’s no wrong outfit for maternity portraits, as long as the couple feels confident and true to themselves.
Capture Different Emotional Perspectives
Look for different angles to ensure that help tell the entire story. Get close-ups of intimate details, like:
- Jewelry
- Wide angles of the entire setting
- and natural expressions during conversations
- The hands of the couple on the baby bump
- The pregnant person’s expressions
- The supportive gestures of the partner
- A mix of above and below angles and close-ups of details.
Advice for expectant couples
The best advice I have for expectant couples is to make the experience fun by working with your photographer to plan a maternity session that is uniquely you. A great maternity photographer will know how to direct you into flattering poses and make the session comfortable no matter the setting, so be sure that there’s an opportunity to add your personality to the session too.
Don’t hesitate to share your ideas, preferences, and expectations so the photographer can produce images that can really tell your unique story.
