How to Prepare for a Headshot Session

From what to wear to how to prepare, these tips will help you get the most value from your headshot session.

Let’s start with the basics. Headshots are meant to capture you as your best, most confident self. When it comes to looking photo-ready, making thoughtful choices for your appearance goes a long way.

What to wear for a professional headshot session

  • Choose clothes that are polished yet comfortable. You want to be able to sit and pose with ease without worrying about your threads.
  • Wear solid colours that complement your features. Colours tend to be a preferred choice over black and whites.
  • If you love wearing patterns, please be sure the pattern isn’t too busy, as it can draw attention away from you in the photo.
  • If you will be using your headshots for your website, be mindful of colour/pattern choice. Consider whether they will complement orclash with your branding.
  • Bring multiple looks to the shoot. Bring what you would wear to work, a more elevated option, and something that highlights your personality, such as accessories.
  • Accessories are your friends! Elevate your look with a favourite watch, some tasteful earrings, or an interesting pocket square. Whatever it is that adds a bit of personality and makes you feel put together. With that, choose accessories that elevate and complement your look and don’t overpower or distract.

  • Style yourself like you normally would.  You want to look and feel likeyourself in your headshot. Opt for a more natural, daytime look.
  • To make your day more stress-free, consider hiring a hair and make-up artist to ensure you have a polished, professional look. This can be added to your shoot to enhance your experience.

Should I wear glasses and eyewear for headshots?

Modern headshot photographyAbsolutely! If wearing glasses is a part of your everyday business wear, it is best to stay consistent and recognizable.  To have the best photos possible while wearing eyewear:

    • Make sure your eyewear is clean and polished.
    • It helps if your lenses are anti-reflective, but don’t worry if they aren’t. As a photographer, I will guide and pose you to ensure there is minimal glare.
  • Wear the glasses you wear most often. Feel free to bring another pair if you would like alternative looks.
  • Consider if you want photo options without glasses as well, if you sometimes wear contacts. Whatever feels most authentic for you.

Now that you have the logistics of your looks locked in, let’s dive into something equally as important: self-care.

How to feel your best before your photoshoot

In the days leading up to your photoshoot, small, mindful choices can help you feel grounded, confident, and energized in front of the camera. Support your energy, your mindset, and your natural glow by:

  • Get a good night’s rest.
  • Stay hydrated in the lead-up to your session.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption within 24 hours of the session. Not only will you feel calmer and clear-minded, but your skin and eyes will more awake and bright.

Offer your input throughout the process
